Our Story
June Buechner Carney and Megan Stearns (we) grew up in dance studios, and for both of us, classes at Steps in New York City played a defining role in our development as dancers. For those who have never visited Steps, imagine walking through a narrow, nondescript door right next to an outdoor bodega on a bustling NYC street; boarding a tiny, ancient elevator to the third floor; and the elevator door opening upon an otherworldly scene of statuesque dancers draped across the floor and furniture, many in various stretches, waiting for class. Pausing at the door of a studio in session, you might spot your favorite principal dancer from American Ballet Theatre sweating through a tough adagio, or an up-and-coming soloist at New York City Ballet earning whoops from the rest of the class as she lands a quadruple turn. And standing right next to that soloist? An octogenarian who attends class without fail every day.
This is what we loved about Steps: it’s a haven for ALL who love dance, no matter your identity, age or skill level. All are accepted and take class respectfully side-by-side with the shared desire to work hard and be inspired. We recognized an opportunity in Vermont to create a community like this here, where the state’s adult dancers could find a home of their own.
We hope that Lines raises the public profile of dance in Vermont, elevates the talent that already resides here, and helps foster new talent and appreciation for dance. We hope that through intentionally building a welcoming and supportive environment for new and experienced dancers of every background, we can help break down barriers of intimidation or exclusivity. Dance is for everyone. If you’ve always wanted to try it, there’s no better time than right now!
